The Autumn gardening catalogues have arrived with tips and ideas for bulbs, so it’s time to buy and pot up the Spring bulbs.

It’s so easy as no special skills are needed. Just put them in a pot or container on the patio, to frame a door or place in the porch remembering that bulbs need to be kept cold – but not too cold! The garden centres suggest that a sunny or semi-shaded spot which receives at least 3 hours of sun per day is ideal as most bulbs won't flower in heavy shade.
I must admit, that through experience, I found the smaller types of daffodils with several flowers are best. I chose, initially, some which had a single large flower sitting on the top of a tallish stem – they flopped. I found out later from the garden centre that it was caused by lack of water and that no amount of watering afterwards would improve the situation. This year, I’m going to buy bags of white daffodils and reddish pink tulips.
Planted during September and October and flowering in early February through to May, spring bulbs are a long-lasting birthday gift for family or friends – and so I’m going to pop a bag of bulbs in a pot.
September Birth Flowers and Birthstone
There are two flowers associated with September - Morning Glory and Aster
The deep blue Morning Glory is a symbol of love and affection.
Asters have long been considered an enchanted flower. In ancient times, it was thought that the perfume from their burning leaves could drive away evil spirits and are known as a talisman of love and a symbol of patience.
The Birthstone for September is the Blue Sapphire and the Zodiac signs that span September are Virgo and Libra.
