Growing memories with your children
The Gardening Bug
Gifts for Young Gardeners
Daisies for Daisy
As a Grandmother, I was always searching for gifts for boys or birthday presents for girls. Plant pots and flower containers became a way of life working at Palm Pot and Peony and a collection of matching handcrafted items has, of course, accumulated for my grandchildren who range in age from 5 – 15 years, and means you are growing memories with your children.
From a very young age, the grandchildren would watch me plant seeds. After they were sown, they needed a bit of patience to see what was growing. But, “good things come to those who wait”. Mustard and cress – their first introduction to growing salad and veg in pots - grew very easily and quickly. And when we finally made the ham sandwiches the kids added their very own salad from their very own pot – from pretty pinks, daisies for Daisy and unicorns to dinosaurs, seahorses and favourite colours.
Mum used to say that she could tell who in the family was an aspiring young gardener because they liked making mud pies and, later on, they had fun growing their own flowers and veg and eating food they’d grown themselves.
My daughter was also bitten by the bug and her grandmother shared some pearls of gardening wisdom when she started growing flowers in pots on the balcony of her first home and herbs on the kitchen window sill.
I think I can say that the whole family became aware of where food comes from at a very young age and therefore the importance of the environment in our everyday life.
August Birth Flowers
Gladioli is the flower for those born in August. It’s also known as the Sword Flower. The Poppy is often used as a birth flower as well.
